ART Interior: Personalized Interior Design in Dialogue with Art
This project is a remarkable example of how residential interior design can be shaped entirely around the owner’s passion—in this case, collecting contemporary Ukrainian art. The house in Lviv, designed by the KOSHULYNSKYY & MAYER studio, becomes a living canvas for works by renowned artists such as Marchuk, Prymachenko, and others. The client is someone for whom these pieces are not merely decorative elements but extensions of his personal universe. The design challenge was to create a home that wouldn’t compete with the art, but would instead support and elevate it.
Architecture That Steps Aside
The key idea behind the project was to treat the interior as a gallery space. In the living area, which is seamlessly connected with the kitchen and dining zone, everything is dedicated to showcasing the collection. High ceilings, a restrained color palette, finely calibrated lighting, and minimalist wall finishes allow the artworks to “speak.” This part of the home exemplifies a delicate balance—designing an interior of this caliber requires deep contextual understanding.
Soft furniture, geometric forms, deliberate zoning, and textures of natural materials create an elegant backdrop for the collection. The living room breathes restraint: a massive fireplace not only provides warmth but acts as a visual focal point. Its materiality echoes that of the kitchen area, where oak veneer and stone countertops take center stage. The kitchen island, with its built-in wine storage, is a subtle nod to the owner’s collector spirit.
A Stage for Culinary Gatherings
Special attention was paid to kitchen functionality, as the owner enjoys cooking and frequently hosts dinners for friends and colleagues. The kitchen was designed as a professional yet visually minimal space. A grill area on the terrace supports the idea of transforming private dinners into gourmet events. All of this is tied into a unified aesthetic where interior design blends naturally with the homeowner’s lifestyle.
Private Quarters: Defined by Character
The bedroom has an unmistakably masculine tone—muted hues, rich textures, and oak veneer paired with MOOOI lighting create a refined atmosphere. The walk-in wardrobe is designed like a boutique—functional, subtly illuminated, and neatly organized. It does more than store clothes; it adds a sense of order and ritual to the space.
The bathroom is an aesthetic scene in its own right. A freestanding tub positioned near a large window offers a sense of bohemian ease, where everyday rituals become moments of mindful retreat. The space features a refined combination of REX tiles, wood paneling, and brass accents—more than a bathroom, it is a sculptural object that completes the composition.
A Home as Gallery
This Lviv residence was envisioned as a living gallery. Hallways, the living room, bedroom, and even the study operate as curated zones, each with its own lighting scenario, perspective, and color calibration. Black and white walls balance the composition while serving as a neutral canvas that enhances the visual power of each artwork. This approach to interior design allows for fluidity in the display—artworks can be rearranged or replaced without compromising the coherence of the space.
A Meaningful Space
The ART Interior project is not just a home—it is a realization of a personal story, aesthetic values, and a lifestyle centered around Ukrainian art. Here, interior design doesn’t play the role of mere decor; it becomes a philosophy. Every detail engages in a dialogue between the space and its inhabitant. This is the essence of true personalized design.
